St. George Municipal School Unit
Superintendent/Special Education Director
St. George is a peninsular community with a year-round population of approximately 2,500 residents. In November 2014, its voters overwhelmingly approved St. George’s withdrawal from RSU 13 by a margin of 85% to 15%. The withdrawal becomes effective as of 1 July 2015. In December the town elected a five member school board and approved a transition budget. Among the five board members there is extensive teaching experience, post-graduate degrees, public and private sector board experience and business management skills. In January, the board hired an interim superintendent – George Joseph – to manage the transition from RSU 13 to the St. George Municipal School Unit. Mr. Joseph is supported by an experienced, nearly full-time, business manager. Due to prior commitments Mr. Joseph’s tenure will regretfully cease on June 30th.
St. George’s student population is approximately 250, split two-thirds K-8, one-third 9-12. K-8 students will attend the St. George School, an Expeditionary Learning School. High school students can choose to attend one of the five schools with which we have an agreement: Oceanside, Medomak Valley (the school of record), Camden Hills, Lincoln Academy and the Watershed School. St. George is committed to provide transportation to Oceanside, Medomak and Camden Hills.
The goal of the school board is to create a superior school system that will prepare our children for productive lives and attract young families to our town. Our community has a long and deep commitment to education and is rich in resources – natural, institutional and individual – that can be employed to build a true community school. We have a veteran, motivated teaching staff rooted in the community and enthusiastic about the opportunities ahead. They have high expectations, as do we all.
We are searching for a full-time superintendent of schools/special education director who shares our aspirations and commitment. In addition to fulfilling all the statutory obligations/requirements of the position, s/he will be a strong leader, one who will animate, innovate and motivate. We seek a candidate who will build a strong professional development program, attract superior teachers and create a professional, enthusiastic, respectful and supportive environment. We require a leader for the long haul, a lifetime learner, ambitious for the success of the staff and students, a critic, a planner, a facilitator, an enthusiast who can work with the board to recruit and employ community assets to build an exemplary school system. We believe in flat organizations, minimum hierarchy, clarity of plan and purpose, transparency, responsibility, accountability. We need a leader who strives for collegiality and consensus, but knows when and how to be decisive.
